The smell of Autumn is in the air but fear not, summer is not quite over! While the leaves are starting to crunch underfoot and the conkers have begun their annual descent to the ground, there is still so much to enjoy in the garden. At Piglet in Bed, we love bringing the outside into our homes and a great way to do this is to incorporate it into your table styling.
We asked the very green-fingered and talented Miranda Hackett to help us style the perfect end-of-summer table, using seasonal British flowers. Miranda is a florist based in the Southwest of England and has picked seasonal September flowers and foliage from her cutting garden in Devon.
- Start with a base for your tablescape. Miranda has used Piglet in Bed’s Dove Grey tablecloth for a neutral background to the arrangement.
- Add your crockery, glassware, cutlery, vases and candle ware and finish off setting the table with your napkins. Here we have used Piglet in Bed’s Navy napkins to contrast with the neutral tones of the crockery and tablecloth. Try using different sized vessels for your floral arrangements for a variety of heights and to make your flowers go further and different length candles to give additional interest.
- Now for the fun part! Time to choose and trim your flowers and foliage. September is the perfect time of year to enjoy the unique crossover when garden roses and dahlias bloom together and where other summer flowering plants are turning to seed heads and hips. Here we have garden roses, snowberry, summer jasmine, dahlias and Japanese anemone, amongst others.
- Trim your flowers according to the heights of the vases you are using and divide amongst them. Fill any gaps with seasonal foliage but do leave some spaces for light, if you're after a delicate and stylish finish. Don't forget to add a little botanical element to your napkins too, as the finishing touch!
Now most gardens are unlikely to have six varieties of garden roses (we wish!) but by venturing into the garden at this time of year you will be amazed by how much is still there, just waiting to be turned into something beautiful.
